Dr. David L. Knutson, M.D.

Dr. David L. Knutson grew up in Cedar Rapids and from a young age was interested in art and science.  He continued to pursue these interests at Cornell College where he studied pre-medicine and was an art major.  He completed his medical degree with honors at the University of Iowa and his dermatology training at the University of Arkansas. In 1999, Dr. Knutson joined Dr. Donald Johnson’s practice.  Ten years later, he became the owner of the practice and changed the name to Dermatology Clinic Of Iowa. Dr. Knutson is certified by the American Board of Dermatology.  He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Iowa Dermatological Society (past president) and is a speaker for AbbVie and Pfizer.  He treats all of the different skin diseases with a special interest in diagnosing and treating melanoma.

The path to the field of dermatology for Dr. Knutson was the result of his own experiences and interests.  As an adolescent, he struggled with severe acne.  The skin care and eventual successful treatment of his acne by a dermatologist was very impactful to him and inspired a desire to help people struggling with their own skin issues.  And the nature of dermatology as an area of medicine relying heavily on visual observation married Dr. Knutson’s interests of art and science.

Dr. Knutson finds practicing dermatology to be very rewarding.  He enjoys getting to know his patients and their families and gets great satisfaction in helping to improve their skin issues.  He works hard to connect with his patients by listening to them and strives to address their skin concerns in a professional, respectful, and caring manner.

Dr. Knutson is the vice president of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art Board of Trustees and is a member of First Lutheran Church where he is a Stephen Minister.  In his free time, he enjoys reading, biking, and spending time with his family and three dogs.
